Best film I’ve seen in ages. Directed by Patrice Leconte. Starring Daniel Auteuil and Vanesssa Paradis. Paradis’s opening monologue is as brilliant as it is spare. The film reminded me of my favorite French novellas – Marguerite’s Duras’ “Destroy She Said,” Robbe Grillet’s “Jealousy” – sexy, petite, perfectly sliced. The film tells the simple tale of a girl who meets a knife-thrower as she is about to jump from a bridge. What evolves is a carnivalesque tale about luck. Erotic. Romantic. And ultimately full of the type of chance that can turn a torn bill into a fortune.
Check out the video for the featured track, “Who Will Take My Dreams Away” by Marianne Faithful featuring one of the film’s quintessential knife-throwing scenes.
